Health Inequalities workshops
2007

To support public health practitioners in their role of reducing health inequalities in England, the Faculty of Public Health organised four regional workshops (Birmingham, York, Bristol and London) to look at those factors which contribute most to health inequality (such as smoking, alcohol, sexual health, mental health and CHD), with an emphasis on interventions targeting disadvantaged and/or socially excluded groups.

The aims of the workshops were to:

  • Create a sense of shared ownership and cooperation by bringing together all the stakeholders in a region (such as the public health observatories and local government)
  • Generate a renewed sense of optimism about what can be and is being achieved to reduce health inequality
  • Showcase some of the targeted interventions that are making a difference to health inequality in England
  • Training people in (or at minimum expose people to) some of the available tools
  • Create a virtual public health community, that endures after the workshops have ended
  • Generate new ideas for demonstration projects, which might be undertaken as the next stage

The workshops were supported by the Department of Health for England and facilitated by Dr Foster Intelligence. Presentations from each workshop are available to download.
