Is the NHS equipped to tackle the burden of alcohol alone?

Date: Tuesday 2 February
Venue: Sloane Room, Royal College of Physicians, 11 St. Andrews Pl, London, NW1 4LE

Alcohol misuse is one of the public health epidemics of the 21 Century. Consumption in the UK has increased by 19% over the last three decades and the costs and pressure on the NHS continues to mount. In the last year alone, alcohol was estimated to have accounted for £2.7 billion of NHS expenditure.

Improving public health has been deemed a key cross-party priority ahead of the General Election and it will be important for any new Government to decide upon the correct approach early on to prevent the unsustainable burden on the NHS. This breakfast seminar will consider the twin tracked approach needed to tackle this issue, bringing together health policy experts from across the field with key opinion formers from Westminster and Whitehall to judge the best combination of system re-design and national policy required.

Ensuring that people can experience dignity and choice in end of life care is a target for all. This national conference is the first of its kind and will focus on the unique role which social workers have in facilitating the fulfilment of the intention to provide choice and dignity. The role of other professions is well known to the general public, but there is a growing awareness that in their important position of being able to enable people, social workers can have a positive impact on people's experiences as they approach the end of their lives.

The conference will examine how this can be achieved in a variety of settings and look at innovative practice in how services can be personalised and increase the quality of care experienced. The presenters and workshop leaders will also discuss how important considerations in the areas of ethnicity and spirituality
